The first week in June is Pet Appreciation Week. Every day, of course, we show our appreciation but this week is about going the extra mile for our furry family members by showing them just how much their presence in our lives really means to us.
Various sources of Veterinary research data show pets do more than just provide us with companionship; they provide us a better quality of life.
Pets are natural mood enhancers
It only takes a few minutes with a dog or cat or watching fish swim to feel less anxious and less stressed.
Keep your blood pressure in check
In one study of 240 married couples, pet owners had lower blood pressure and lower heart rates during rest than people who did not own a pet.
Help lower cholesterol
Researchers have noted lower levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in people who own pets compared to people who don’t.
Assure better physical fitness
People who own dogs tend to be more physically active and less obese than people who don’t. Taking your dog for a daily 30-minute walk will keep you moving and ensure that you meet the minimum recommendations for healthy physical activity.
Lessen allergies & strengthen immunity
Researchers have found that when children grow up in a home with a dog or cat they are less likely to develop allergies. In addition, higher levels of certain immune system chemicals show a stronger immune system, which will help keep them healthy as they get older.
Lead to a Better Quality of Life
Visits from therapy dogs help patients recovering from devastating illness or an event such as a stroke. Some dogs are trained to understand a range of commands which lets them help people with aphasia (a language disorder common in older adults, particularly those who’ve had a stroke) feel good when they see the dog understands them. And, petting or scratching a dog can help a patient rebuild strength while recovering from a stroke or other illness. It also creates a feeling of calm.
The list of all the health benefits of pet ownership goes on. With that being said, how can we show our appreciation for their unwavering loyalty to us? Here are some ideas:
- Make sure they are up to date with their routine vet visits to ensure the optimal health and a longer life!
- Bake a special homemade treat for them.
- Take them on a special outing – a new dog park or beach or switch up your daily walking route.
- New toys (we know our furry friends can’t get enough chew toys).
- Give your little friend a fresh look with a soothing bath and some grooming.
- Lots of ear scratching and belly rubs – because they deserve it!
